GuyK’s ‘Golden Touch’ - How Do You Find Evangelists

My GNoTE colleague, Kiran, pointed me to this videocast by Guy Kawasaki on how to find evangelists. Guy has a candid way of telling you what you should already know. Check out the videocast, and you’ll know what I mean.

Enjoy!

GNoTECon - Evangelist Survey

At GNoTECon, Frederic Lucas-Conwell of Growth Resources, Inc., presented his findings based on surveys he’d presented to several technology evangelists from around the world. He’s drawn an extremely interesting personality analysis, amongst other things. Here’s a pointer to his whitepaper.

Thanks, Frederic!

GNoTE Con videocast is online now!

The first GNoTE Con was a great opportunity to learn about Evangelism, network, talk to the speakers and more. Unfortunately we can’t offer all of it through the blog, but what we can do is provide the conference sessions online.

Guy Kawasaki’s presentation slides from GNoTECon

Here’re Guy’s slides from GNoTECon. For a synopsis of what he spoke about, go here.

I’m working on getting permission from the other speakers to put their slides up as well. Also, stay tuned for the webcasts.

GNoTECon - The Art of Evangelism

What a day… What a surreal day. I can’t believe GNoTECon just ended. It was everything I thought it would be.

Guy Kawasaki kicked things off. He spoke on the Art of Evangelism (he’s told me he’d give me the slides later). He was brilliant. That’s the only way I can describe his talk. Here’re some of the things that stand out from his talk.

Did you know Guy was Apple’s 2nd evangelist? He was referred to the role by his ex-roommate.

  • As one of Steve Jobs’ direct reports, apparently he could fly first class any time his flight was longer than 2 hours. He would start counting down the minute he left home.
  • Guy was hoping the ‘G’ in GNoTE stands for Guy
  • Guy’s Golden rule - Whatever Guy touches doesn’t turn to gold. Guy touches golden stuff.
  • Wendys mission statement is the most preposterous one ever - talks about leadership, innovation and partnerships
    • Wendy’s mission statement should’ve been healthy “finger” food
  • Evangelists need to have an internal mantra
  • If you don’t have one go to Dilbert’s mission statement generator
  • High and to the right vs low to the left
  • No one from Google showed up - how bizzare
  • Make your presentation highly personal
  • Infuencers are folks without the title
  • Look for agnostics not atheists
  • Give them something very easy to use to join the cause
  • Dont let the bozos tie you down
  • Made the right decision for my family - everyone except folks in the valley clap for that
  • Bozosity (sp)

Here’s my li’l claim to fame :

More later… ta,

Live from GNoTECon

Guy just got done with the GNoTECon keynote. I am in…. awe. I’ve never heard Guy speak before, and he was just awesome.

I’ll be posting later with more detail, but I couldn’t stop laughing when Guy said he thought the ‘G’ in GNoTE stoody for ‘Guy’. I’m not sure if he meant ‘Guy’ or ‘guy’, however. :|

More later. Stay tuned…

What’s in it for you?

What’s in GNoTE, for you? I’ll go first :

  1. I want to meet other people who do what I do today. Being an alumnus of GNoTE will mean I’ll have friends through the network who share the same passions I do.
  2. I want to learn from other evangelists.
  3. I want to make ‘tech evangelism’ a known concept in the industry and academia.
  4. I want to use GNoTE to establish connections worldwide. (not too different from #1)

This is my preliminary wishlist. Your turn.

where’s Scoble, you ask

So when the 200th person asked me today why Scoble, an ex-softie and one of the world’s most famous ‘evangelists’, was missing from the GNoTECon lineup, I decided to lie. Just for the fun of it.

Annoying human : Why isn’t Scoble in your GNoTE lineup?

Me : He doesn’t want to be associated with evangelists anymore. He hates evangelists now. He hates all of us. He’s a hater. He’s a non-believer. He’s the anti-evangelist.

AH : Whatevers, he doesn’t know you and he doesn’t want to associate with you.

Me : No. We’re like the bestest of friends. BFF. We’re so close that I just call him “Scoble”. I even know his middle name. Its, umm, John. Did you know Scoble used to race waterboats when he was a kid. Yeah. And he loves to smoke. He’s a smoker. Did you know that? Those are things only best friends know about each other.

AH : So what’ve you guys done ‘together’?

Me : Last year, we went to Denmark. And we did the safety dance. Twice.

And so it went on… In reality, Scoble was a speaker we had on our list early early on, but he had a prior commitment. He’s one of the nicest famous people I know. To be that popular and non-arrogant requires serious patience and skill. And I believe he’s in the UK this week. Dan’l Lewin’s another speaker we’d tried to recruit. Unfortuantely, he too had a prior commitment.

So that’s that. I still heart Scoble. And Scoble still hearts me. Honest. He told me so when we were playing poker last night.

Currently playing in my head : The Safety Dance, Men Without Hats
